I just returned from the grocery store. Prices, especially for basics such as eggs, milk and bread, are rising rapidly. What are your tips and strategies for saving money at the supermarket?

Buy the store or generic brand. You probably won't notice the difference from name brands. Watch the store flyers for specials. Coupons can be a pain, but you can save by using them. Look for stores that have senior citizen shopping days. One market in my area (New Mexico) offers 10 percent off on a senior's total purchase the first Wednesday of every month. This is the time to stock the pantry and the freezer! Shopping Smartly New Mexico
Buy more whole foods and fewer prepared foods. If you're going to cook, cook. Do like your grandmother did: Buy a chicken and roast it. Use the leftover meat for sandwiches or salads. Boil the carcass for a few hours with herbs, mirepoix. Strain it and use the broth in soup, along with any leftover meat. For $10 and a little extra work you have three meals.
